It is Carnaval time, not Carnival.

Samba girl in Rio

It is that time of the year again in Brazil, and Rio is now in full swing expecting to receive over 800,000 tourists  who will leave over 500 million dollars to the city and will hopefully enjoy the samba and the party spirit that hangs over every carioca corner .

It is fair to comment though, that more and more cariocas leave Rio during the Carnaval trying to escape the non-stopping parties and noise which are inevitable and expected. However, as always once the party starts everything makes sense and Brazilians become this proud People united in samba.

During the Carnaval, crime rates drop dramatically and Rio is indeed, one of the safest places to be. People of all colours, cultures and backgrounds get together for 3 official and several unofficial days of party. Celebrities, drug dealers, the homeless, the bourgeoisie all samba the same music and share the same open space: Sapucai.  The Sapucai area is a giant concrete catwalk from where everyone can appreciate the samba schools  with local celebrities, top models and actreesses parading their assests and talents.

Madonna enjoying the samba parade

This year the new Brazil fan, Madonna, watched with boyfriend and children the whole show, sparkling rumours that she might herself join a samba school next year. Madonna was joined by Rodrigo Santoro, Nicole Scherzinger and Gerard Butler in the VIP area.

Cariocas will still have Monday and then, the mardi gras to get into the samba mood. Then it all comes to an end when on Wednesday, the official hangover and getting back home day, the winner samba school is annouced. Competition is rife as serious money is trhown every year in the samba schools performing their most luxurious choices of materials, accessories, theatrical equipments and musicians. The fight to get the most beautiful celebrity to be the schools godmother, as per tradition, is also taken very seriously and some less well known models or actresses use the samba school parade and their sculpted bodies as platform for TV shows and PR careers.
Celebrities show their samba skills

This year, judging by the number of stunning aspiring actreesses, models, presenters or girls next door, the competion for the best godmother is hard, but as all is well that ends well, losers or winners will be delighted that Carnaval is over, so that they can start thinking about the next one… next year!

And Jesus sported a leather jacket

Missed Rio Fashion Week? Worry no more. Sao Paulo Fashion Week has just started and glamour is topping all catwalk shows of the crème de la crème in Brazilian tendency. Elaborated numbers with state of art cut, inspired by sophistication and timeless elegance, are on show in the 28th edition of the SPFW this year hosted in the Bienal space.

Luz for Brazilian Ellus

Ellus, the modern and outrageous brand has been contemporary for over 20 years and it again, showed its connexion with the current. The brand, who hired Agyness Deyn for its last campaign, brought to its catwalk the hottest property in the fashion and celebrity world right now: Madonna’s on and off man, Jesus Luz.  Jesus wore leather pieces which were the main theme of Ellus F/W show. A little rock and roll, a little James Dean, very young and very in.

The trendy brand Colcci, whose face has been Gisele Bundchen since her teens in her native Rio Grande do Sul, hired a stunning Alessandra Ambrosio (Victoria Secrets and Next UK) for its Sao Paulo show.  Alessandra substituted the newly mum and with again, Jesus Luz showed pastel and comfortable numbers paired with trainers and stylish ponchos.

The list of celebrity models in the SPFW seems to go on and on. Raquel Zimmerman (Chloe and Alexander McQueen) also made her glamorous entrance exclusively for Animale, one of posh Brasileiras’ all time favourite brands, for its clean, high tech and minimalist approach to chic. Think Céline for the tropics!

No… Rio and Sao Paulo fashion weeks do not feature heavily in the fashion world as much as NY, London and Paris. Having said that, for those looking for serious fashion tendency with cutting edge glamour can give Europe a break. The pulsing and creative Brazilian fashion industry is as refreshing as it is talented. Oh, and it comes with free exotic appeal.

Is it late to wish you a happy new year?

Fireworks in Copacabana beach

After a number of consecutive NYE celebrations in Europe, it came as a refreshingly good idea spending NYE in hot Rio de Janeiro. And so I did. And it was as wonderful as I thought it was going to be.

No, it was not my first Rio NYE. I am Brazilian after all! I lived in Rio for a long time. Not long enough to stop me going back with nostalgia and thirst to be a carioca again. The special element of this NYE was the fact that we were celebrating the arrival of 2010.

Yes, nothing new about that. However, I was in Rio when I was celebrating the arrival of 2000. Then I remember asking my private gods and angels to give me a future somewhere distant, places to travel and a love from far away. Of all new year’s resolutions, I suppose finding a new love is the one everyone secretly hopes for, but they cite shaping up instead, so they do not look like total losers when the year ends and they are still single or with an empty heart – worse than being single.

After carefully choosing my white outfit, I headed to the beach: Copacabana beach, precisely right opposite the Copacabana Palace. The crowd is massive and they wear white or carefully chosen colours linked to some sort of superstition that brings smiles and hope to the souls joining the big party.

So here is a quick guide for beginners:

white is peace – being to you or to the world.

yellow is money – hopefully in pots of gold!

green is hope – hope for a better life, a better you perhaps?

blue is tranquility – usually sported by the pretty young ladies that have just found love and now wish to get married.

red is hot red passion – sexual or just some ambition and drive back into your life.

Most people however, choose to wear white, only because they can afford to be more specific or adventurous about the colour tone when it comes to their underwear, another superstition – it must be new and translate according to the colours mentioned above.

My privacy is mine, but I did wear white and went to the beach to celebrate 10 years past. And then it was me plus a husband from far away, plus a daughter, minus a mother, plus sisters and nieces, plus a father. I was celebrating 10 years down the line. 10 years of dreams and hard reality, joy and sadness – being alive that is.

I still every now and then spend NYE in cold Europe, wearing black or whatever I fancy. But when in Rome…

Maybe it was just meant to be, maybe it was the vibe in Rio 10 years ago, maybe it was just my strategy working. Whatever it is, anything you wish for when in NYE in Rio, is bound to happen. Don’t believe me? I challenge you to try next year.

Happy one!
